Anna Pappas Gallery presents, Transit, a new body of works by Simon MacEwan. This exhibition explores the subjectivity of observation, demonstrating how what we don’t see may alter our perception, confusing our expectations and introducing us to ambiguous power within shadows.

Meticulously crafted and elegantly designed, Transit is an evolution of MacEwan’s perpetual desire to activate the viewer’s imagination and create new potentialities within his work. Meticulously crafted and elegantly designed, MacEwan investigates the experience of time using various mediums including light, watercolour and 23kt gold. Some works allow for the capture of many moments simultaneously, in others, slow movements take place over time. In this exhibition, works are apprehended with the knowledge that they will change, and that each viewing is a unique state of the object, particular to that moment.

MacEwan’s alluring water colours on paper will offer a delicate meditation on slowness and space, whilst his mechanical investigations will transform the gallery into the site of a slow moving, intimate eclipse of light and shadow. Just as each work contains the imperfect reflection of the landscape above in the water below, the paintings are the double of each other, but with each mirroring comes a change; each moment of repetition is also an act of differentiation.

Artist ( Description ):

Simon MacEwan (b. 1974) is a multidisciplinary artist, whose diverse practice operates as a constant state of exploration. With works spanning from drawing to animation, to sculpture and jewellery, the artist has described his practice as “a tree, where new areas of skill are explored, but the main trunk is always the art-making.” MacEwan’s elegant works often engage in materialising new potentialities across various media and is represented in the Artbank collection, Sydney; the Banyule City Council Art Collection, Melbourne; Ipswich Art Gallery, Brisbane and Monash University Museum of Art, Melbourne; alongside private collections worldwide. MacEwan is exclusively represented by Anna Pappas Gallery since 2008.
