Running until November 24, the solo exhibition by Japanese artist Yuki Asano is part of HIDDEN Gallery's initiative featuring Japanese creatives. This exhibition provides insight into Asano's distinctive artistic perspective, which centers on the exploration of memory and its ephemeral qualities.
Asano, originally from Hyogo, Japan, earned her Bachelor's degree in Mixed Media from Kyoto University of Art and Design in 2007. Her creative process is marked by spontaneity; she typically skips initial sketches, allowing her imagination to lead her artistic journey. By employing acrylics, pastels, and various mixed media, she layers colors and textures to achieve depth and intricacy in her artworks. This method reflects how memories build up and gradually diminish, resulting in pieces that evoke nostalgia.
Her creations invite viewers to connect with their own feelings and memories. By transforming transient moments into visual stories characterized by gentle hues and fragile shapes, Asano prompts personal interpretations that resonate with shared experiences of memory and loss. The lightness of her art contrasts with its emotional depth, making it both accessible and thought-provoking.
“The memories in my mind are quite vague, fading over time, shifting without my awareness, and blending together. The images I create are expressions of these ambiguous forms merging into one shape, symbolizing an elusive 'something' that is present yet can't be precisely defined. I wonder what scenes you will envision when you view my paintings. I hope you will ponder what the elusive 'something' might be that lies within.”

HIDDEN Gallery, established by Filip Kartousek, seeks to promote emerging artists who may not yet have a strong foothold in Prague's art community. The gallery was created to explore neglected spaces and present artists with compelling visions that go beyond current trends. Initially located in unconventional venues, HIDDEN has now found a home on Bořivojova Street, offering a dedicated space for local and international artists alike.
By prioritizing enduring works over fleeting trends, HIDDEN Gallery cultivates a unique atmosphere for exploration. Asano's exhibition embodies this vision, providing an opportunity for audiences to engage with the deeper aspects of her art and reflect on their own personal experiences.
