“Scars and wrinkles map our lives on our skin. Soil and rock strata accumulate over time under our feet. And the same happens with materials, brushstrokes and fingerprints.”
Held in a repurposed department store close to Brixton tube station, Layers is an exhibition by the International Artist Collective UNPRIMED Collective, from Turps Art School, London.
Over 30 international artists reflect on the topic of Layers, and how it intertwines with the artistic process. Investigating layers, both in the subjects depicted and the artworks, the artists have selected works to unveil their artistic research - from studies and sketches, to the materials, brushstrokes and fingerprints which come together in their works.
In the exhibition, visitors will explore the layers in each work, investigating this concept within the passage of time, into our derma or within geological stratifications, and in the creative process.
For one weekend only:
“You are invited to peel back the layers of this multifaceted, collective inquiry by moving through the space, peek beyond the surface, and reflect on the complex interplay between external appearances and internal truths. What will you discover? Transitory phases, signs of a metamorphosis, or the decomposition and birth of matter?”
(quotes from the exhibition statement, UNPRIMED Collective)
