This exhibition features the work and sketchbooks of Fauzia Akbar, a Camberwell College of Arts BA (Hons) Drawing student who passed away last year. A tragic loss to all who knew her, this display provides an opportunity to celebrate her prolific talents that demonstrate her love of art and enthusiasm for making.
In her work, the allegories and symbolism of Western art history were explored through a combination of drawing, painting and embroidery techniques. Hers was an inventive approach to art-making that yielded unique and captivating results.
Accompanying the show will be an exhibition by staff and students, who will take inspiration from art history to create new works, a fitting tribute to Fauzia Akbar's life and work.
There will be examples of embroidery made by members of the Akbar family, including a 1938 piece by her grandmother, and her sister Arifa has written a vivid and moving account of Fauzia's artistic life for the Camberwell Press publication that complements this exhibition.
