Pentimento in painting is the emergence of an underlying image, especially one that has become visible when the top layer of paint has become transparent, perhaps with age, providing evidence of revision by the artist. The Italian word literally means “Correction.” More broadly it can mean the revelation of an underlying truth or reality.
In this exhibition Partners artists explore this intriguing artistic phenomenon in a variety of media. The viewer can apply his or her archaeological eye to painted canvas, scraped or chiseled impasto, covered and layered prints and repurposed objects.
