Durden and Ray and SOIL Gallery presents By and By: Hope for the Future.

Progress can be defined as “continuous improvement or the development of an individual or society in a direction considered more beneficial than and superior to the previous level.” Artists from Seattle and Los Angeles look at the subjectivity and duality of progress. Concepts and movements in the name of progress have lead to positive change and societal advancement. Conversely, they have also been used as justification for oppression. The artists in this exhibition explore themes relevant to our cities and landscapes such as gentrification, technological developments, environmental destruction, and preoccupation with the future.

By and By: Hope for the Future presents works in a range of media including sculpture, video, new media, photography, and painting. Through these varied approaches each piece contemplates or challenges our notions of progress. Additionally they are examples of the expansion of new techniques and ideas within each artist’s practice.
