Somewhere between the unpredictability of a New York City night and the volatility of the studio practice is Plus One, a throwback exhibit celebrating chance, uncertainty and summer folly. What happens to an exhibition selection when academic rationality with curatorial pretension are stripped away in favor of chance and the independent judgment of artistic community? Can elaborate reasoning be replaced with pure intuition and unyielding trust?
Echoing the DADA movement, each of the nine participating artists was asked to select another artist of their choice, “a plus one” per se, while remaining blind to their peers’ respective invitees and the type of work they will be contributing. This precarious approach decentralizes the common curatorial practice of grasping for linear flow within group shows and instead imbues the exhibit with an element of unexpected intrigue and uncharted haphazardness that remains dismissed by the art world at large. The opening of the exhibition will be serendipitous and revealing, with a high risk of success, as well as that of a failure.
