Chinese American Arts Council/Gallery 456 is pleased to present Pingzheng Qian: Square and Circle. on view from March 21, 2025, through April 4, 2025.

Exhibition Statement

Pingzheng Qian’s body of work explores themes of spirituality, mythology, and cultural heritage, drawing inspiration from a visit to Mount Putuo in Zhejiang Province, China. This experience provided a profound observation of collective devotion, as individuals gathered in worship, seeking moral and spiritual guidance. Qian’s work reflects on the universal human inclination toward belief systems, transcending geographical and cultural boundaries.

This series incorporates visual elements derived from ancient Chinese legends, religious traditions, and Buddhist temple totems. While the compositions exhibit abstract qualities, each piece is imbued with symbolic narratives that evoke contemplation on tradition, faith, and the human connection to the divine. The works are characterized by a fusion of abstraction and storytelling, inviting viewers to engage with the layers of meaning embedded within the imagery.

Rather than prescribing a fixed theoretical or philosophical interpretation, Qian encourages an open-ended engagement with the artwork, allowing viewers to derive personal insights. The exhibition is titled Square and Circle, reflecting the conceptual interplay between geometric and cultural symbolism.

Opening Reception: March 21, 2025, 6-8pm
