Spoke Art San Francisco is pleased to present Food Fight, a two person exhibition by Dave Perillo and Ian Glaubinger. This tasty new collection showcases work inspired by fictional food and restaurants found throughout pop culture, plus scrumptious samplings of some of your favorite food mascots reimagined. Perillo and Glaubinger have cooked up a menu full of prints, print sets, mixed media combo meals, and original sketches.

Based in Philadelphia, PA, Dave Perillo produces work in a retro style that developed from his love of the mid-century modern aesthetic. He draws inspiration from big name cartoonists like Walt Disney and Charles Schultz, from the characters and creature-driven aesthetics of Jim Henson and 1950’s science fiction movies, and from the fantastical storylines of Hanna Barbera and the Twilight Zone, among many others. He has grown to work for some of his major inspirations (Disney, Peanuts, Warner Bros, Cartoon Network…) as well as iconic musicians, toy companies, publishing houses, and more.

New Jersey artist Ian Glaubinger draws inspiration from similar mid-century modern sources throughout the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. While he most enjoys expressing his vintage inspired work through screen prints, Glaubinger also has extensive experience with character design, toys, and apparel. His clients include Lucasfilm, DreamWorks, AMC, Sony, Marvel, Mattel, WWE, and many more.

Together, Perillo and Glaubinger are serving up a feast full of works straight out of the past - cereal box characters, drive in movie theater concessions, diner menus priced in cents instead of dollars - wholesome, familiar branding that has been replaced by polished millennial aesthetics. The artists have also reimagined some of our newer generations’ beloved characters (from Spongebob Squarepants to Breaking Bad’s Los Pollos Hermanos), imbibing them with the comfortable warmth of nostalgia. The color theory, retro typography, and often limited palettes of these imaginary ads are an ode to history’s greatest Character Advertising icons - the ones who poured out sugary cereals while watching Saturday morning cartoons, who offered gimmicky food delivery on skates, or who invited us into their personal lives as TV voyeurs; the intangible corporate mascots we grew up with who became tangible friends through the products they were printed on and the hearty all-American experience they created.

Please join us for Food Fight, starting Saturday, November 9th with an opening night reception from 6pm - 9pm at Spoke Art San Francisco. Both artists will be in attendance. The exhibition will be on view through Saturday, November 23rd.  For more information or additional images, please email us at info@spoke-art.com.
