The year 2024 marks the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo, a distinguished Venetian who played a significant role in connecting East and West. To commemorate this anniversary, CIFRA and Art Night Venezia launched the open call "Marco Polo (Re)imagined," encouraging artists to explore our shared world, cultural diversity, and the relevance of travel today.
Artists were invited to submit works that delved into Marco Polo’s legacy or personality, or focused on themes of travels and expeditions, both real and imaginary. The open call aimed to discover works that re-examined the role of travel in modern society. Submissions included existing projects by artists working with new media.
The CIFRA Award featured three categories of nominations:

On June 22nd, during Art Night Venezia, the shortlisted works were presented, and the following three artists were announced as the winners:
Cheng Xinhao with "To the Ocean"
Alexander Glandien with "The Institute"
Shuree Sarantuya with "Curse of Staged Atavism"
Each winner received a €1500 prize, and the finalists were featured on the CIFRA Main Page.
CIFRA is an international curated streaming platform for new media art.
Cheng Xinhao (b.1985 in Yunnan Province, China) currently lives and works in Kunming, China. He received his Ph.D in Chemistry from Peking University in 2013. Cheng’s works are usually based on long-term field studies, centering around his hometown in Yunnan Province. With videos, installations, photographs and words, he personally investigates the polyphonic relationships between logic, discussions, knowledge, and the part that nature, society, and history play within them.
Alexander Glandien is a German artist and filmmaker. His artworks deal with the appropriation, interpretation and manipulation of history and have been presented in numerous international exhibitions and film festivals and they are part of several public art collections.
Shuree Sarantuya is a media artist and activist living in Cologne since 2019. She was born and raised in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. She graduated from the Mongolian State University of Arts and Culture in 2016 with a bachelor's degree specializing in film and broadcast directing. Until February 2024 she studied at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne, with a focus on game engine-based video content. Most of her work centers on ethnic minorities, the last nomadic tribes, and indigenous peoples in North, East, and Central Asia. She bases her practice on artistic research and nomadic knowledge that leads to an experimental procedure in which she uses diverse digital media to depict the constant transition/migration of a nomadic household to a sedentary lifestyle.
