Second Nature is an exciting new sculpture show from artists’ group Changeable Beast and renowned guest artists Alice Wilson, Ian Dawson, Nicky Hirst and Marcus Harvey opening at Cornwall’s Tremenheere Sculpture Garden and Gallery on Friday 9 August 2024.

Work has been created from a starting point of Tremenheere’s beautiful natural environment using the phrase ‘Second Nature’ to ask questions about our relationship to the world. The exhibition asks – Where does nature end and we begin, where does the world become not nature?

Sculptures in a diverse range materials and media from found objects to ceramics, steel and wood, hi-tech to traditional will be shown both inside the Tremenheere Gallery and outside in the beautiful landscape.

Changeable Beast are Aileen Kelly, Alex Hegazy, Andy Gomez, Belinda Worsley, Carolyn Whittaker, Chuting Lee, Clare Jarrett, Diana Wolzak, Eveleigh-Evans, Ellie Reid, Jennifer Moore, Karen Byrne, Katie Houston, Kay Senior, Matthew Foster, Ornela Novello, Rachael Causer, Sandy Layton, Seona Myerscough, Susan Young, Tania Salha, Tessa Garland, Tina Culverhouse, Tom Witherick, Vivien Delta.

Lead curator,Tessa Garland, one of the founding members of Changable Beast, is a former resident of Penzance and as part of work with Penwith Artist Led Projects (PALP) has previously curated ephemeral projects and exhibitions at Tremenheere.

Speaking of the show she says:

“I’m so excited to be returning to the Sculpture Gardens to curate Second Nature after two decades living away in London. For the exhibition I have invited fellow sculptors from the city whose work is both innovative and diverse.  Each artist has responded to the site with fresh eyes and created work that reflects both their urban lives and the inspiring location of Tremenheere.”

Tremenheere is one of the most unique all-year-round gardens to visit in Cornwall. In addition to the gallery shows such as Second Nature, the wider gardens feature a permanent collection of site specific work by internationally renowned artists (including five members of the Royal Academy of Arts).

The Tremenheere gardens open daily from 10.30 am to 5.30pm, gallery opening hours are from 11am to 4pm Tuesday to Saturday. Check the website for other days, open Bank Holiday Monday.

On Friday 9 August the exhibition will launch with a special evening event of performances by artists Katie Houston and Ornela Novello along with the opportunity to meet many more of the exhibiting artists – all are welcome to attend, no need to book - 6.00pm- 8.00pm. There will be introductory talk to the exhibition led by Diana Wolzak Saturday 10 August providing insights into the artists' creative processes, themes and materials 11am – 12.30pm, 1.30pm – 3.00 pm.  On the closing Saturday 7 September there will be a clay workshop with Sandy Layton 11am – 12.30pm and a closing event from 2.00pm – 4.00pm.
